One of the things that we have become increasingly interested in with our frequent visits to The Somme area and Southern Belgium (Ypres) is Trench Art.
Strictly speaking, Trench Art is a phrase that describes folk art created by soldiers who were stuck in the trenches during World War I. But Trench Art as a more broadly defined genre includes all sorts of art objects made during numerous military conflicts going back to the early 1800s, including items produced by prisoners of war.
We don’t ever buy military items such as weapons etc as we are not keen on guns but trench art is so personal, so skilful and so important to save we buy it when we see it and make sure it goes to good homes! We particularly like shell cases that have been engraved etc. The ones below are all available in our shop.
